Thirty-one miles down US-59 North, on a rising slope, sits the Presidio La Bahia. Just outside the charming town of Goliad, the Presidio is an impressive remnant of a mid-18th century fortress. Here, Texas history was made when Colonel James Fannin and his men of the new Texas Republic Army were brutally massacred by Santa Anna's Mexican Army.
Ardent military strategists argue that Fannin foolishly led his men into the situation, and many disregard him as a noteworthy leader in our state history because of this. We disagree. Maybe because it's a history laid out in our own back yard; we choose to see the man who stood his ground. The man who believed in principle and honor. The man who valiantly asked for the humane treatment of his soldiers and that he be shot in the heart upon his execution. It is the character of the man we pay tribute to in naming our whiskey.
Our Colonel Fannin's Whiskey is something we imagine our Texan forefathers would have found nourishing and comforting on the eve of battle. It's the kind of whiskey you can easily enjoy neat, seated around a campfire with your compadres. It also has a sophistication with notes of honey that blends well if you prefer it in a mixed cocktail. Either way you choose to take it, it's good to the last drop. Cheers to that!
